Chinese Embassy Supports Free State Learners with 1,300 Pairs of School Shoes

Minister Zhou Maoyi of the Chinese Embassy joined the 1 Million Shoes Campaign in Welkom, Free State, over the weekend, where 1,300 pairs of school shoes were donated to learners from nine local schools.

The initiative aims to provide essential support to children and ensure that they can attend school with dignity and comfort. The donation forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen community development and educational support in South Africa.

Speaking on the significance of the gesture, Minister Zhou described the school shoes as more than just a practical necessity.

“A small pair of shoes is a symbol of friendship,” he said, expressing hope that the children would “walk steadily to success and grow healthily into future envoys of China–South Africa friendship.”

The donation highlights the enduring ties between China and South Africa and reflects the shared commitment to investing in the next generation through education and community support.

The 1 Million Shoes Campaign continues to make a positive impact across South Africa by helping learners from disadvantaged communities gain access to basic school necessities, ensuring that no child is left behind on their educational journey.
